How can I upload my files to my Web site using Dreamweaver®?
The following instructions will cover typical usage of Dreamweaver,
and assume the software has been installed correctly on your system.
The instructions are only for individuals with a direct Internet
connection, via modem or network. If you are behind a firewall or
proxy server, the information below may not work. Consult your network
administrator for more information.
Publishing to Your Web Site
From the Site drop down menu, select Define Sites.
Select Local Info
and fill in the following:
Site Name - A friendly method of identifying the
connection.
Local Root Folder- Directory where the files are
located on your local machine.
HTTP Address - This address enables the Link Checker
to detect HTTP links that refer to your own site
Cache - The cache maintains file and asset information
in the site. This speeds up the Asset panel, link management, and
Site Map features..
Select Remote Info.
On the right you will see Access - Drop down to the connection protocol
you are using. You want to use FTP.
Then fill in the appropriate fields.
FTP Host - Enter your ftp.domainname.com.
Host Directory - Same as root directory. You can
also leave this blank.
Login - Your administrator username.
Password - Your administrator password.
Click OK.
Click on Site and scroll down to Connect
After logging in from the "Site" window, which is used
to transfer files to and from your Web site, the following will
display:
You can transfer files to and from your Web server by simply selecting
the files you want and dragging them to the appropriate location.
So for example, if you wish to upload your entire website, you would
select all the files in that folder on your local computer on the
right window, and drag them all over to the root "/" of
your Web server in the left window.
There are many more options available in Dreamweaver. See the software's
documentation for more information on the advanced options.
Note: When transferring files via FTP, do NOT
overwrite or add any files to a folder with a "_" prefix
like "_vti_scripts". These folders are used as part of
the FrontPage Extensions. Modifying anything in those folders can
corrupt the FrontPage Extensions.
